SmartCal Privacy StatementSmartCalendar, Inc. has created this privacy statement in order to demonstrate our commitment to your privacy. Since SmartCal is heavily based on the unique advantages of sharing information, and using information others have made available to share, we feel you should know exactly how we gather and use information. The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for this entire website.PhilosophySmartCal considers the information that its users include on the service to be the private correspondence of its users. SmartCal will not monitor, edit or disclose information about a user or a user's private content, except that user agrees SmartCal may do so in the good faith belief that such action is reasonably necessary:
Traffic InformationEach time you come to SmartCal, we collect some information to improve the overall quality of your online experience. We collect your domain name, referral data (e.g., the last URL you visited before coming to SmartCal), your browser and platform type, and the time of your visit. We use this information to help diagnose problems with our web server, and to administer, maintain, and improve our web site.We also count, track, and aggregate your activity into our analysis of general traffic flows at our site. We may aggregate information about you into group data, which may then be shared with our advertisers; but SmartCal will not disclose your individual identity or personal data without your permission, except as required by law. When we present aggregated information to outside companies, no one will be able to identify you or contact you. CookiesSmartCal does require the use of cookies. We use cookies for two reasons. First, we use cookies to store your login information so that you do not have to continually verify your identity to access each successive page. Second, we use cookies to store "session" information, which helps us display what you are expecting to see (for example, show your calendar in a daily view, versus a weekly or monthly view). Furthermore, our cookies contain encrypted data which is much more secure than basic web authentication.RegistrationWe require a few pieces of information for you to use our site. You must choose an arbitrary user id and password, but we require a valid email address (we email a code to your given address and you must enter the code to activate your account). We also require that you choose a question from a list, and that you supply the answer to this question. Should you lose or forget your password, you will be asked the chosen question, and if you can supply the correct answer, we will alter your password and mail it to your address. Since we store your password encrypted, we do not know what your password is, so the only way for you to gain access to SmartCal again is to start with a known password. You can of course change your password at any time. We also require you to enter your time zone so that we can accurately present event information and so that you can schedule events. We do not disclose this information to anyone, except as an aggregation to be used in gathering general statistical data. We will only contact you should there be a question about your account in regards to the SmartCal terms of service. PreferencesWe collect various pieces of information that is solely used to enhance your SmartCal experience. These options include time zone settings, start and end times for calendars, whether or not to automatically correct for Daylight Savings Time, your default calendar, and your default calendar view. We fully expect to add more options in the future to improve our service.Contact InformationYou may optionally supply various pieces of personal information, namely your name, address, and birthday. This contact information is used only to enhance the information used to describe events and their locations (e.g. when you send an event to a friend or colleague, your name is used to let them know who the event is from and your address is used as the default location for the event). We do not otherwise disclose this information.CalendarsYou can store event information on your calendars at SmartCal. By default, this information is accessible only by you. You do have the option of sharing none, some, or all, of this information with a select group of people, or with everyone who uses the site. Each calendar you create has an associated set of access, posting, and editing rights which you control. If you choose, you may subscribe one or more of your calendars to one or more of someone else's calendars. In this case, you may be be presented with information which is not under your control. The subscription gives you automatic access to a class of events (like a sports team's game schedule). This information is ultimately controlled by another SmartCal user, and unless they have given you specific permission, you will not be able to change this information. You can of course cancel your subscription, in which case you will no longer see the information at all. You may, if you choose, provide whatever information you want to others through some set of your calendars. People who subscribe to the calendars you make available cannot modify the events or information in these calendars, unless you have given them permission to do so. Co-BrandingSmartCal allows you to brand the calendars you create. This means that you can replace the SmartCal logo with your own logo. In addition, when someone clicks on your logo, you can have them sent to another web site. This is intended to act as free advertising for your group, organization, or company, and to help give your calendar its own look and feel. For instance, a sports team calendar would want to replace the SmartCal logo with their own team logo or mascot, and use that image to link to the official web site of the team. When the SmartCal logo is replaced with another image, a small "powered by SmartCal" logo will still appear. In the future, it may be possible to specify a color palette on co-branded calendars to complete the look and feel of another organization beyond SmartCal.Public ForumsThis site makes certain calendars available to some of its users, and certain other calendars available to all of its users. Please remember that any information that is disclosed in these areas becomes shared or public information and you should exercise caution when deciding to disclose your personal information.LinksThis site contains links to other sites, through both advertising and user-generated event content. SmartCal is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such web sites.SecurityThis site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. Every user account is protected by a user and password verification. We store passwords in an encrypted fashion, so we do not even know what your password is.Every calendar has a set of accessing, updating, and posting rights which the owner of the calendar assigns. By default, only the calendar owner can access, edit, and post to the calendar, but permission can be given to a select group of people, or to everyone. Be careful when assigning rights and make sure you know what you are doing. Choice/Opt-OutThis site does not currently support an automated mechanism to cancel service. You can simply stop using the service. It is our full intention to provide choices to you whenever possible regarding issues around your privacy. For instance, you will be able to choose and change whether or not you want to receive various types of email notification when this is implemented. Corrections And UpdatesThis site gives users the following options for changing and modifying information previously provided at http://www.smartcal.com/user/options.
